The Valley’s finest piece of culinary history resides at the base of Mummy Mountain. El Chorro offers a memorable fine dining experience ideal for special occasions, but we love going to enjoy a basket of their legendary sticky buns any time! Their remarkable space blends indoor and al fresco dining seamlessly, with tasteful Southwestern décor to enhance the local eating experience.
Sunday brunch and the full dinner experience are their specialties, and neither are to be missed. Our favorite dinner options are the old fashioned broaster fried chicken (as mouthwatering as it sounds, we promise) and the center cut 7 oz filet mignon. For brunch, give their Scottish smoked lox or banana pancakes a try for something really special. Their food focus remains truly local, including keeping locally roasted coffee and Schreiner’s sausage on the menu, even after 81 years of service.
Our favorite Fox Restaurant Concepts space bills itself as “The Greatest Neighborhood Restaurant,” and it’s easy to taste and see why when you visit. Sam Fox’s neighborhood bistro is spacious, friendly, and inviting any time of day. Their coffee bar makes a mean latte, is a great place to catch up with friends or hold a business meeting early in the day, and even serves a full breakfast.
If you’re visiting later, we recommend stopping by during their happy hour, which runs from 3-6 pm Monday-Friday. You can sit on their patio to take in a gorgeous view of Camelback Mountain, and sip on our favorite among their $5 cocktails: the refreshing mint cucumber mule (especially in the summer!). You also MUST try their warm kale and truffle dip and grilled & chilled shrimp! Their innovative and extensive dinner menu is well worth tasting, too, with options like a mouthwatering braised short rib, classic American burger, and seared Ahi tuna sure to please anyone.
Yes, we’re recommending a gas station – but hear us out! The Thumb, named after Tom’s Thumb, which you can see from the patio and gas pumps, is also an award-winning BBQ joint and bakery. It received national recognition on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and is home to quite possibly the best BBQ eats in Scottsdale.
The Thumb serves lunch and dinner, and incorporate their BBQ meats as an option in almost every dish. Turn a breakfast taco into a smoky delight by adding pork or brisket, or enjoy your eggs with a hearty helping of smoked pulled pork. If you’re in a hurry, their coffee shop also serves incredible chai lattes and pastries to go.
This truly high-end Spanish steakhouse restaurant is located inside Arizona’s only Four Seasons Resort. As a result, you are treated to incredible views of Pinnacle Peak while enjoying a wide selection of tapas, paella, and other Spanish-style treats. Talavera offers alfresco and indoor dining options in a vibrant atmosphere, and sources much of their produce from Arizona farms. Their extensive menu means you can choose to share tapas with a large party or savor your own meal, with options like spiced tuna crudo, seared scallops, and 20 oz bone-in ribeye.
If you’re interested in upscale drink options, Talavera offers plenty to please in this realm, too. Pair vermouth or Sherry with Spanish olives and cheese, or enjoy your favorite gin martini made with one of their diverse gin options. Their massive list of wines by the glass or bottle will surely please your whole party, too with a focus (naturally) on Spanish, Portuguese, and South American wines.
Don’t let their casual atmosphere fool you: Red, White, & Brew is a great place to try gourmet meals off an extensive menu, either for lunch or dinner. You can walk in straight off the nearby golf courses or from a morning of hiking and enjoy unique dishes such as asiago crusted halibut and pan seared chicken livers with a glass of wine. The space is perfect for large groups or more intimate gatherings, and the service is excellent.
Their brick oven pizzas can be made NY style, or even with whole wheat or gluten free crusts. Hearty and delectable entrees such as burgers, sandwiches, steaks, and more are also available to please a wide variety of palates. And just like their name suggests, this is a terrific place to grab a cold brew, either on draft or by the bottle.
CM2 is a rare local treat in a neighborhood filled mostly with chain restaurants. The neighboring restaurant to its parent, Casa Mia Italian, is a livelier, more casual spot with the highest quality baked goods and selection of Italian wine in the neighborhood (and quite possibly all of Scottsdale). They promote clean, organic, wholesome ingredients and use them to create beautiful and authentic pizzas and panini.
Where they truly shine brightest, though is their baked goods. If you follow them on Instagram @CM2PBS, you’ll see a constantly experimenting crew who source inspiration on a global scale. Just a few of their absurdly delicious and original offerings include: souffléd goat-cheese cheesecake on a pistachio chocolate crust, Belgian chocolate cupcakes made healthier with avocado oil and coconut sugar, and triple chocolate cake with coconut cream and toasted coconut flakes.
The Hermosa Inn itself is one of the most transcendental hidden gems in Arizona. This boutique Southwestern-style hotel was built in the 1930s and is tucked away among private residential Paradise Valley neighborhoods. Luckily, you don’t have to be an overnight guest to partake of the remarkable cuisine at LON’s, which sources and prepares local ingredients with classical cooking methods.
LON’s is also one of the best local restaurants to enjoy an exquisite and knowledgeable wine and food pairing experience. Their wine program has been nationally recognized since 1996, and their underground wine cellar and three wine vaults contain over 500 food wines from American to Old World appellation selections.
The Farm at South Mountain is a small town unto itself located in South Phoenix. Nestled at the base of South Mountain, this sprawling working farm is home to three incredible restaurants: Morning Glory Café (for breakfast), The Farm Kitchen (for lunch), and Quiessence (for the ultimate romantic, gourmet dinner). It’s also a hugely popular venue for outdoor weddings, with picturesque white picket fences, an abundance of tall trees to shade wide open grassy areas, and unbelievable food.
Quiessence may be the most unique farm-to-table experience in the Valley, serving Michelin star quality dinners in an uncomplicated way. Their four, five, and six course menu options work on a prix fixe scale, with courses including aged Arizona beef carpaccio, steelhead trout, and pistachio soup. The restaurant’s extensive wine menu speaks to their focus on providing a truly fine dining experience, and the quiet and comfortable surroundings are anything but fussy. We recommend Quiessence for anniversary celebrations and the Farm’s other amazing restaurants for every day pleasures.
Cave Creek is well known as an Old West destination, and no place in the town displays the Wild West flavor as well as Buffalo Chip. Even after a 2015 Thanksgiving Day fire kept doors closed for a while, Buffalo Chip rebuilt and came back strong and better than ever. This true saloon keeps food and drink options fairly simple and focused on fantastic BBQ fare, but what you really visit for are the bull riding rodeo rounds and live music.
There is always something happening in addition to the rodeo, including musical chairs (yes, we’re serious) in the rodeo arena, holiday-themed events (including Christmas in July), and good ol’ fashioned line dancing. If you’re a little rusty, they also offer FREE dance lessons four nights a week. It’s safe to say the Valley’s most famous saloon has come a long way since 1951 when it opened as the feed and bait shop on the way to Bartlett Lake!
